NBC Sports

Regional Sports Network Rebrand

Jack Morton/PDG

2019

The new studio design reflects the vibrancy of NBC Sports, with an expansive, open layout designed for movement and flexibility, and is being rolled out across all markets, including Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, The Bay Area and Washington DC.

Full-height windows frame dramatic 360• views of the each market's cityscape. Custom photography, captured and composited by Raeford Dwyer from multiple viewpoints in the city, offer identical day and night versions of the skyline. The set walls trace the irregular shape of the studio, built off the concourse of the arena. A grid of illuminated lines criss-crosses the space creating a united framework. Echoes of the NBC logo ripple across the walls, creating a subtle, architectural reminder of the brand. Color-changing light boxes are laced throughout the studio, providing instantaneous shifts from one team color to the next.

Large displays are seamlessly integrated into the architecture, making every part of the studio an engaging broadcast location. A sleek LED display runs along the length of the room, forming the backdrop for the main anchor area. The visual center of the space is a dynamic Demo Area, with a large wall display and an LED floor inset in a sparkling acrylic platform, all framed by glowing arcs and a forest of portrait monitors. This powerful area offers unique and exciting ways to break down all of the action.

With attention placed on creating a bright and airy space – including desks and other furniture – the set is designed to be open and sculptural, inviting viewers to draw closer to the talent.

Google - Goblin King

NYC Event Space

Raeford Dwyer/ 3C Studio

2017

Google's brand new building at 85 Tenth Ave boasts The Goblin King event space, a 250-seat auditorium with a stage backed by a 4 x 4 video array and two projection screens integrated into an RGBA color-changing feature wall.

Raeford was tasked with creating a sophisticated space that would be used for outward-facing events, internal Google events, and would also be broadcast-friendly. Additionally,

the client wanted the new room's design to echo the "geological" theme of the building's third floor. This was quite a departure from the "black box" spaces Google typically uses for events.

The color-changing layers of the wall resemble geological striations in a canyon, providing visual interest while making the room brand-versatile.

Two drop-down projection screens live in alcoves, thereby integrating them into the design. The alcoves have independent lighting control, so when the screens are in use, they can be framed in darkness. When the screens are retracted, the lighting reverts to the layered wall design.

The monitor array is backed by a ribbon of LED lights, making it "float" off the wall. The stage is modular and removable. The custom-designed lectern is fully integrated into the lighting and AV systems.

The result is a highly versatile, sophisticated and camera-ready event space.

Moynihan Station

Empire State Development

2017

Jack Morton worked with Empire State Development and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to produce scenic artwork and LED train schedule billboards for the new concourse under the Farley Building at Moynihan Station. The scenic murals are tromp l'oeil 'shadow boxes' with paper texture, drop shadows and watercolor paint details depicting different neighborhoods in New York City. They offer a bright and colorful introduction to visitors and commuters arriving in the city.

Penn Station's new West End Concourse adds a new entrance to the much-maligned station, allowing commuters to get into the station through the Farley Post Office for the first time. It's the first section of the eventual 255,000-square foot Moynihan Train Hall to open, a train hall that will eventually come with 112,000 square feet of retail space and 588,000 square feet of office space.

“Our design for Moynihan Train Hall culminates a long-held vision to create a new transportation hub that serves not only as a suitable entry and departure point to our magnificent city, but also a destination unto itself,” stated Roger Duffy, design partner at SOM in a press release. “We are honored to have been involved with this project since its inception and look forward to continuing to make Moynihan Train Hall a new landmark for New York City.”

RNC & DNC Conventions

2016

Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” went on the road for the party conventions with a new look.

Setting up at the Breen Center for the Performing Arts at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland and the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the show has constructed two identical sets for the nightly broadcast.

The design, from Jack Morton PDG, doesn’t attempt to recreate the main set design, but instead works to capture “Washington in repair.”

Connecting the set pieces is a large cyc of Washington, D.C. at sunset, with outlines of the White House etched into translucent colored panels. Raeford assisted with the design and production of these elements. - read the entire article at NewscastStudio.com
